Tongariro Alpine Crossing:

Duration: 8 - 9 hours

Walk via lava flows as recent as 1954 and learn of the fascinating Geological history from as far back as the great Lake Taupo eruption in AD 186 and the creation of Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom Lord of the Rings) 7,500 years ago.

See views of Mount Taranaki out West, Lake Taupo north, the Rangipo Desert, and the Kaimanawa Ranges (with its wild horses).

The distance is 19.4km and the highest point is 1,886m. You'll climb almost 900 vertical meters from the start point at Mangatepopo and descend just over 1,100 meters to a pick-up point at Ketetahi.
